Students completed a series of activities to see the connection between different forms of oxidation: combustion (burning candle) and cellular respiration (the "burning" of food in the cells to release energy). Bromthymol blue indicator turned green in the presence of carbon dioxide given off by the burning candle and in the presence of exhaled air.
