 Tracey and Brendan wondered about the amount of energy in marshmallows as compared to cheetos. They did the following investigation.

 

Question:

Do marshmallows or cheetos contain more energy (calories)?

 

Prediction (hypothesis):

 

If we heat water using burning marshmallows and burning cheetos, then the temperature of the water will

Materials:

One small marshmallow (0.4 g)

One small cheeto (0.4g)

30 ml of water at 20 degrees C. (six times)

Ignition source (candle or match)

Paper clip stand to hold burning snack

Ring stand to hold water over the flame

 Procedure: 

  1. Gather materials
  2. Put 30ml of room temperature water into container and place on ring stand above paper clip holder, measure the starting temperature of the water and record
  3. Place the marshmallow on the end of the paper clip holder 1 cm below the container of water
  4. Light the marshmallow and let it burn completely, heating the water in the container
  5. When the flame goes out, measure the temperature of the water immediately and record
  6. Repeat steps 1-4 twice more with marshmallows
  7. Complete three more trials using cheetos instead of marshmallows
  8. Clean up materials
