Kingdoms:
Read pp.
65-70 in Diversity of Life Resources book. |
The science of taxonomy
classifies organisms into five kingdoms relying on fundamental similarities
within each group. These similarities (and differences) have to do
with the (1) the types of cells that make up the organisms, (2) how many
cells make up the organism, (3) can it move, and (4) how does it get energy
for life processes. Like all animals, humans can be classified as
eukaryotic (made of cells containing nuclei), multicellular (made of more
than one cell), mobile (able to move), and heterotrophic (eat other
organisms for energy). |

Bread mold |
Students set up cultures of
bacteria and fungi by sealing slices of bread in zip lock bags. After
the holiday break we will take a look at the kingdoms of fungi and monera
and see if any representatives are thriving in these mini-habitats. |

Insects are the most numerous
animals on our planet. They all have a tough exoskeleton, six legs, a

simple. When insects reproduce they go through a process called
metamorphosis, which can be either complete or incomplete. |
