Story 1: Mr. Galileo thought that gravity might affect all objects in the same way. He thought that big things and little things fall at the same speed when dropped. At a party one night, he held an orange and a grape above the table at the same height, then let them fall simultaneously from his hands. The two fruits hit the table at the same time. Galileo told his friends that this supported his theory, but they laughed at him, because in those days everyone knew that big things fall faster than small things.

Story 2: Jessica heard that hot water freezes into ice cubes faster than cold water. She didn’t think that was true, so she decided to do an experiment to find out. She put hot water (45ºC.) into a plastic ice cube tray then put the tray in a freezer. She timed it with a watch and found that it took 100 minutes for the water to turn completely to ice. She did the same with cold water (12ºC.) and it took 84 minutes. To be sure of her results, Jessica decided to do the experiment over again using metal ice cube trays.
